The Power of Lipstick

Reading time: 9 minutes

Lipstick is more than just a cosmetic. One swipe and you can suddenly feel like you’re a different person. Well, that’s a little extreme, but I certainly feel uplifted when I wear lippy and dare I say, more confident, especially when there’s a special occasion or an important meeting about to happen. Ok, I’m a little vain, but I don’t care. And then there’s the fact with age our natural lip colour tends to fade, so they need help, right? Even if I’m not wearing any other makeup, I love the power of lipstick and I rarely leave home without it.

But before I explore how lipstick can enhance your look, let’s take a step back in time and learn how the power of lipstick has evolved into the cosmetic bag essential it is today.

A brief history of lippy

The history of lipstick goes way back to ancient civilizations. Women have been painting their lips for centuries and one of the earliest known lipstick enthusiasts was Cleopatra, the Egyptian queen. She famously crushed beetles to create her own red lip colour, but she wasn’t alone in her love of lip adornment. The Mesopotamians were also known to grind precious gems to apply to their lips for a little extra sparkle. Fast forward to the 16th century, and Queen Elizabeth 1 made bright red lips against pale skin popular.

The downs and ups

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for lipstick wearers. At various times in history, particularly in the 1700s, lipstick was frowned upon, with some even associating it with witchcraft or labelling it as scandalous. It wasn’t until the 20th century that lipstick finally became an acceptable and much-loved beauty product for women. Thanks to the innovation of mass production, lipsticks were finally available in department stores. Iconic brands such as Max Factor and Revlon lead the way and helped shape the modern image of the confident, lipstick-wearing woman. It soon became a symbol of empowerment and self-expression. It’s incredible really, but that’s the power of colour. Women also discovered that wearing lippy actually cheered them up. Still to this day, in tough times, many women will trade bigger luxuries for smaller ones like a lipstick. Sounds smart to me. Oh, the power of lipstick!

What a lipstick can do for you?

Now that I’ve given you a little history lesson, let’s look at what lipstick has to offer. Here’s what a flattering shade, when applied correctly, can do for you:

  1. Brighten your face: A flattering lip colour will instantly brighten your complexion. Even if you skip all other makeup, lipstick alone can give you a refreshing glow.
  2. Enhance your features: Lipstick draws attention to your mouth and helps define the shape of your lips. A well-applied lipstick can give the illusion of fuller lips and add symmetry.
  3. Boost your confidence: There’s a reason so many people call lipstick their must-have. Whether you’re walking into an interview, a first date, or just out for a quick coffee, lipstick can give you an instant mood lift. It’s like putting on a pair of high heels for your face.

When it comes to choosing a lippy consider what type you need and want

Different kinds of lip products

There are several kinds of lipsticks, so do your research before you hand over your money. For example, they can be hydrating, sheer, glossy, matte, stains or long wearing to name the main ones. When it comes to choosing a lipstick consider what type you need and want.

  • Hydrating, sheer and glossy lipsticks are great for keeping lips soft and plump. They’re soothing for dry lips, but not so good if you’re eating or drinking, as you’ll need to reapply.
  • Long wearing lipsticks stay put. They’re great if you want to apply and forget. When you’re applying one make sure you take your time and create a clean, even lip shape. It’s worth the effort. An occasional top up with a balm of gloss can keep it fresh looking. If you’re dining out oily foods will tend to lift a long wear lipstick, so keep it handy.
  • Matte lipsticks often wear well. They give a matte finish, which you’ll either like or not. Keep in mind they can be less flattering for older women.
  • Lip stains give your lips a flush of colour, and they can last well. They’re ideal as a colour booster or if you don’t like the feel of lipstick on your lips.
  • Lip liners help to define and enhance your lip shape. They can also prolong the life of your lipstick if you use it to colour in your lips, before applying lipstick. To use, start at your Cupid’s bow and draw an X shape to clearly define the ‘V”. Then draw around your natural lip line. To make your lips look bigger draw the line just outside your natural lip line, rather than on it. Use a shade close to your natural lip colour or one that’s close to your lipstick shade.

Little extras for your lips

  • Lip balms are ideal for keeping your lips soft and hydrated. If you’re out in the sun use one that also has SPF.
  • Lip primers can prolong the life of your lip colour, especially if you’re not using a long-wear lipstick.
  • Lip scrubs help to refine your lip surface and remove surface dryness, which will give you a smoother lip finish. If you keep your lips hydrated on a regular basis, for example with a lip balm, you’re far less likely to need one.
  • Lip brushes help you create a clean lip edge and deliver your lipstick precisely where you want it.

Take your time and check shades on your lips or skin if you can

Choosing the right colour for you

Knowing what shade it best for you can be overwhelming. There are so many options to choose from. One way is to do your research. Another is to trust your gut and be guided by what appeals. Take your time and check shades on your lips or skin if you can. The last thing you want to do is buy another lipstick that ends up in a pile of ‘I wish I hadn’t bought that’. I have way too many.

Here’s a quick guide:

  • Fair skin: Pale complexions glow with blue-based reds, soft pinks, and peachy nudes. If you’re feeling bold, try a cherry red or a coral.
  • Medium skin: You have more flexibility here. Warm reds, mauves, and berry shades all look fantastic. Deeper nudes with hints of brown or rose will also complement your skin tone.
  • Olive skin: Earthy tones like bronze, copper, and deep reds are perfect for olive skin. A punchy coral or a rich plum can add an exciting pop of colour.
  • Dark skin: You can rock bold colours like nobody’s business. Deep plums, rich burgundies, and bright reds will make your lips stand out. Dark chocolate or caramel shades are also stunning.

How to apply lipstick like a pro

So, you’ve got your lipstick, and you’re ready to go. But wait, rather than do it on auto pilot and simply swipe it across your lips, check out these tips. You might find out you’ve already got it mastered, or you could discover your application method needs a little tweaking.

Step-by-step guide:

Prep your lips: No matter how subtle or bold your shade is, it won’t look its best on dry, flaky lips. Start by exfoliating your lips with a lip scrub or a soft toothbrush. Follow up with a hydrating lip balm and give it a few minutes to sink in.

  1. Prime time: To keep your lipstick from fading or feathering, apply a primer, or a thin layer of foundation or concealer. This can also help to even out your natural lip colour and make your lipstick shade pop.
  2. Line them up: Use a lip liner that matches your lipstick or your natural lip. This step helps define your lips and prevents your colour from bleeding. Trace the natural shape of your lips, but if you want extra fullness, line just outside your lip edge.
  3. Apply your lipstick: Now for the fun part. You can apply directly from the bullet or use a lip brush for more precision. Start at the centre of your lips. Define your Cupid’s bow and then work your way out to the corners.
  4. Blot and reapply: For longer wear, blot your lips with a tissue after the first coat. This removes excess product and ensures a smoother finish. Then, apply a second layer of lipstick to help your colour last longer.
