The Older Woman’s Guide to Style

by | Jun 8, 2024 | Personal Styling, Style

Reading time: 7 minutes

When Women in Bloom Founder and Co-Director Annie Millar asked me to write about style, I was a bit perplexed to be honest. Me? Style? I’m a chuck some jeans and a t-shirt on with comfy shoes, type of girl. In my mind, style and I barely have a passing acquaintance.

But then this actually got me to thinking…what is style anyway?  Is it the way we dress? What we wear? The way we carry ourselves? Is style a wholly personal thing, or something we aspire to and emulate after seeing what Hollywood glamazons and gorgeous 50+ influencers are wearing?

I had to find out more about what style actually means, especially for the older woman, with the result a hopefully enlightening summary for those of you, who like me, never really gave style much thought.

Our style can evolve beautifully

As we age, our style evolves. It reflects our wisdom, experiences, and unique personalities. However, it can sometimes feel challenging to balance trendy pieces with a sophisticated look.

How can I stay on-trend as I’m ageing?

To be honest, do you even want to? This is where style really is about personal choice. However, if you do want to stay on-trend as you age, then embrace your individuality and keep an eye on current fashion trends. Here are some tips to help you maintain a stylish, modern wardrobe:

  1. Incorporate modern accessories: Accessories are a fantastic way to stay on-trend without overhauling your entire wardrobe. Think bold necklaces, chic scarves, statement earrings, stylish handbags, and bangles, big or small.
  2. Mix classics with trends: Pair timeless pieces, like a tailored blazer or a classic white shirt, with on-trend items. This could be a modern print skirt, a pair of fashionable shoes, or bold coloured and/or shaped reading or sunglasses glasses. It keeps your look current, without compromising on elegance.
  3. Embrace colour and prints: Don’t shy away from vibrant colours and contemporary prints. Incorporating a pop of colour or an eye-catching print can refresh your look and convey a youthful, energetic vibe. Think Jenny Kee… she rocks it!
  4. Update your basics: Invest in updated versions of your wardrobe basics. For example, opt for well-fitted jeans in a modern cut or a little black dress with a contemporary twist. They’re never out of fashion.

What should a 45+ year-old woman wear?

No, I’m not telling what you can and can’t wear! The key to dressing stylishly in your forties and onwards, is to focus on fit, comfort, and quality – not a particular style of clothing that you ‘shouldn’t wear – and don’t let anyone tell you differently! Here’s what to keep in mind though:

  1. Tailored pieces: Well-fitted clothing can enhance your silhouette and give you a polished look. Tailored blazers, trousers, and skirts are essentials that never go out of style.
  2. Quality fabrics: Invest in high-quality fabrics that offer both comfort and durability. Natural fibres like cotton, silk, and wool are excellent choices that also feel great against your skin.
  3. Layering: Master the art of layering. A lightweight cardigan, a stylish jacket, printed blouse, or a sophisticated coat can add depth and interest to your outfit while providing practical comfort.
  4. Versatile dresses: Midi dresses and wrap dresses are flattering, versatile, and appropriate for various occasions. They can be dressed up with heels or kept casual with flats.
  5. Comfortable footwear: Stylish doesn’t have to mean uncomfortable. Look for shoes that offer support and elegance, such as block heels, stylish flats, or ankle boots. My personal favourite at the moment? Chunky flats, whether it’s a loafer, sandal, boot or brogue. I love them all!

How to dress without looking frumpy

Oooh the “F” word. It’s painful, and as much as I don’t consider myself a fashionista or style specialist, I’m definitely not a fan of frumpy. Avoiding it is all about finding the right balance between style, fit, and comfort. Here’s how to ensure your outfits are chic and flattering:

  1. Avoid oversized clothing: While comfort is key, overly baggy clothing can look unkempt – and make you lose your beautiful body shape – no matter what size you are. Opt for clothes that follow your natural shape without being too tight.
  2. Choose the right lengths: Hemlines and sleeves that end at the thinnest part of your limbs (just above or below the knee, at the wrist) can create a more streamlined, elegant appearance.
  1. Structured pieces: Incorporate structured pieces like a well-cut blazer or a fitted skirt. A blazer made with multiple panels in the back gives you a lovely, tailored look, and will prevent a boxy silhouette.
  2. Accessorize wisely: Statement accessories can elevate a simple outfit, but don’t overdo it. Choose one or two standout pieces to avoid looking cluttered.
  3. Outdated styles: Holding onto styles that were considered trendy decades ago can date your look. If you truly love that look however, then periodically update your wardrobe with contemporary pieces to stay current. Rockabilly women with tattoos who wear the 40’s and 50’s style dresses, shoes and hairdos are examples of this. They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but boy, do they own their style, and that in itself makes them fabulous.
  4. Neglecting grooming: Personal grooming, including hair and makeup, plays a significant role in your overall look. A modern haircut and subtle makeup can make a huge difference.
  5. Ignoring accessories: Accessories can transform an outfit from drab to fab, so don’t neglect them. A good accessory can be the finishing touch that pulls your look together, and you don’t need to spend a fortune either!

Op shopping!

If you’re a fan of op shopping (thrift shopping for our American readers), you know you can score some amazing finds. A few years ago, I scored a fabulous navy blue blazer that only cost $4. After I got it home, I removed its blue plastic buttons, and sewed on some lovely faux-brass ones I found at Spotlight. Voila, as good as new – even better, to be honest. Total cost, $16. The buttons cost more than the blazer!

Fashion is about choice – and feeling good!

Ultimately, fashion is about expressing yourself and feeling good in what you wear. Here are some final tips to keep your style vibrant and true to you:

  1. Personal style: Embrace your personal style. Whether you prefer classic, bohemian, or eclectic looks, you own it girlfriend!
  2. Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try new trends and styles. Fashion is a form of self-expression, and experimenting can lead to exciting discoveries.
  3. Confidence is key: The most important aspect of any outfit is the confidence with which you wear it. When you feel good, you look good!
  4. Listen to your body: Clothes that make you feel comfortable, make you feel confident! If you feel restricted or uneasy, it will show in your demeanour.

Style is personal

I think at the end of the day, style boils down to this; it’s personal – it’s what you make it. Style is a combination of what you wear, how you wear it, how you carry yourself, and yes, even what you aspire to.

As you navigate your fashion journey as you age, style is a personal expression of who you are – and that can be the jeans, t-shirt woman; the woman with chunky shoes and funky glasses; the woman with tattoos and styled hair… you get the picture.

Embrace the changes, experiment with new trends, and always, always prioritise what makes you feel your best. With this in mind, you can continue to look on-trend, chic, and vibrant at any age.
