7 Compelling Reasons to Give Meditation a Chance

by | Apr 11, 2024 | Life, Spirituality

Reading time: 5 minutes

Several years ago now (actually, many more if I’m being honest), I found myself taking part in a meditation practice in yoga called Savasana (pronounced Shavasna). It shattered my preconceived notions of what meditation was. I stopped believing it was for only people who were calm and could hold focus, or that meditation was a waste of time. I practiced guided meditation more often and found it to be incredibly helpful in my day to day life. I honestly believe the benefits of meditation are worth sharing, so here they are – my top seven compelling reasons why I believe meditation deserves a chance!

1. Calm amidst chaos

Let’s not make any bones about it, life is chaotic. In the midst of that chaos however, meditation offers a space where you can hold peace. Both personal experience and scientific studies attest to its effectiveness in creating a calm state of mind. Starting the day with a meditation session sets the tone for tranquility and can transform a frantic wake-up call into a peaceful nudge. There’s a big difference between gently coaxing a loved one out of bed versus frantic shouts to wake up – with both parties feeling its effects!

2. Effective pain management

Scientific research published in the Journal of Neuroscience highlights meditation’s potential as a tool for pain management. Through focused attention on the breath, individuals learned to divert their focus from physical discomfort. While I haven’t personally explored this aspect, the findings are compelling. I’m intrigued by others’ experiences in managing pain through meditation and if you have any first-hand experience, please let us know!

3. Expansion of grey matter

The brain’s plasticity is incredible, frankly, and it appears that meditation can harness its potential for growth. Studies have shown increased grey matter volume in regions associated with emotional regulation and response control. In simpler terms, meditation cultivates a more composed and mindful approach to life’s challenges. It’s like upgrading to a more sophisticated operating system for your brain – minus the bugs and glitches of course!

4. Cultivation of creativity

Creativity thrives in a relaxed and joyous mind and research on short-term meditation’s impact on creativity proves this point. Participants who engaged in meditation for just 30 minutes daily over a week displayed improved creativity and emotional regulation. Ideas just flow more freely when we’re not burdened by stress, which subsequently produces the opportunity for ideas to flourish.

5. Enhanced multitasking abilities

In today’s fast-paced world, multitasking is often a necessity. Surprisingly, meditation has been shown to enhance multitasking capabilities. A study involving Human Resource personnel revealed that those trained in meditation exhibited lower stress levels, improved task memory, and greater focus. It’s a testament to meditation’s practical benefits in the workplace and beyond.

6. Improved sleep

Meditation is like your secret weapon for getting some quality shut-eye. You know those nights when your brain just won’t quiet down, and you end up tossing and turning? Well, meditation swoops in like a superhero, calming your mind and easing all that built-up tension. It’s like hitting the relaxation button before bed. It can also dial down those stress hormones (well hello there, cortisol), so you’re not lying there staring at the ceiling. With regular meditation, you’ll find yourself slipping into dreamland more easily, waking up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

7. The power of daily practice

Consistency is key when it comes to meditation. Daily practice yields profound results, shaping not only our minds but our entire outlook on life. With regular meditation, individuals report increased resilience, improved relationships, and a deeper sense of inner peace. It’s akin to tending to the garden of the mind—each session nurturing growth and vitality.

Embrace the practice

Meditation isn’t reserved for yogis on mountaintops; it’s a practice accessible to all. Dispelling misconceptions and embracing its potential can lead to transformative experiences. Whether it’s carving out moments of stillness amidst the chaos or reaping the cognitive benefits, meditation offers something invaluable to each practitioner.

Why not give meditation a chance?

Meditation isn’t a fleeting trend or a passing fad—it’s a timeless practice with profound implications for personal growth and well-being. By exploring its depths, we unlock reservoirs of calmness, creativity, and resilience within ourselves. So, why not give meditation a chance? The journey inward may just lead to remarkable discoveries and a newfound sense of balance in a world that can get a little crazy!
